Supporting Mercedes-Benz Italia’s CO2 reduction goals

01—
Setting the scene

Car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is striving to increase its use of green energy by actively sourcing new renewable energy solutions. Tackling and reducing CO2 emissions is a key challenge for the business and a key focus for the ongoing sustainability strategy is to target the company’s logistics sites.

With this in mind, Mercedes Italia came to BayWa r.e. to ask for support in delivering a solar PV roof-top project for its north Rome logistics centre.

Mercedes Italia wanted a solution that would not only reduce the location’s carbon emissions but would also reduce its corporate energy bills.

Meeting the Challenge

On this occasion, our expertise was used to help Mercedes Italia to develop and fine tune their own design, helping to ensure it dovetailed perfectly with the logistics centre’s conditions and operating processes. We worked closely with Mercedes Italia’s team to understand the particular requirements of the site and to make sure these were correctly reflected in the final roof-top scheme.

The use of our own novotegra South II mounting system, as it is perfectly tailored for south facing buildings with flat roofs, was also recommended by the team. Once completed, the project comprised of just under 1,400 panels.

Our Energy Solutions team also took Mercedes Italia through the complex grid connection process, meaning the projected was completed and up-and-running more quickly than Mercedes Italia had originally planned.

Today, the installation is making a significant contribution to Mercedes-Benz Italia’s sustainability goals.

The result

With payback expected in just four years, the new PV installation can generate up to 500 kWp, delivering not only close to 300 tonnes a year in CO2 savings, but also supplying around 40% of the centre’s energy needs. This has meant a significant reduction in corporate energy costs of around 35% per annum.

In order to know how much power production is expected each day, our team also provides Mercedes Italia with a Sving. Mercedes Italia is also relying on our skills and expertise to deliver operations and maintenance services for the new installation, precisely tailored to the special conditions of the site.

Our Energy Solutions team is now working with Mercedes-Benz Italia on the next roof-top solar project, this time starting with design and development of plans – making us consultant, partner and supplier. We’re looking forward to continuing to build on this new relationship and helping Mercedes Italia to make great strides in its renewable energy journey and achieve its CO2 neutral goal!

The BayWa r.e. team has been incredibly supportive and professional throughout the entire process. They were also involved in the process of connecting the plant to the grid which helped us tremendously in speeding up the commissioning process – enabling us to get online even faster than expected.
