Together, we will make the global energy transition a success
Moving towards a Net-zero Carbon Future
To make the global energy transition a reality, large-scale ground-mounted solar parks are vital. They can provide us with reliable, predictable quantities of renewable electricity.
Large-scale ground-mounted PV systems ensure that there will always be enough renewable energy for households, business and industry, with the ability to meet increasing demand thanks to battery storage and hydrolysis technology.
Such solar parks are generally highly competitive when it comes to production costs, not only when compared with conventional generation, but also other renewable energy sources.
BayWa r.e’s experience proves that high-quality solar projects can generate clean, subsidy-free renewable electricity all over the world.
Helping pave the way to sustainable energy
Did you know that you can help the renewable energy transition by providing your farmland, fallow, or former industrial or military land for the construction of a solar park?
As a landowner making land available for ground-mounted solar PV projects can provide you with a reliable and fixed rental income for the next 20 years or more. You can also potentially earn more money off your land by taking over additional services such as grass maintenance. You can be assured that we’ll be your direct point of contact throughout the entire lifespan of your project.
Get in touch with us if you have at least 10 hectares of eligible land!

Proven to stand their ground
The assembly is made from high quality, coated steel. Mounting is simple and straightforward. The optimized cable management, which leads all DC lines above ground, enables fast intervention in service and avoids insulation faults due to DC bridges spanning rows. Yield losses are counteracted by the consistent use of string inverters, which are easily and speedily replaced in the event of a fault.
The south oriented generator field continues to be the most suitable design in many cases. Depending on the plant location and the planned remuneration model, we are increasingly applying an east/west orientation for the generator field. This enables us to better adapt the generation profile to expected electricity consumption curves and the revenue mechanisms linked to them. We expect this development to be further strengthened by the continued expansion of renewable energies.
Following the sun
Especially in more southern locations, we are increasingly relying on the use of single-axis tracking systems. Modules are mounted along a guide axis of up to 100 meters in length in a northerly and southerly direction, which is driven by a motor. This ensures that the modules follow the course of the sun from east to west and the angle of irradiation of the sun on the generator field is optimized. Using tracker systems achieves additional yields of approx. 20% compared to the south-facing open space approach.
Higher investment costs are currently paying off especially in locations with a high irradiation supply. The changed yield profile means the tracker offers interesting planning variants -production is shifted from midday to daytime off-peak hours. This represents an important alternative to smooth photovoltaic production peaks, which are to be expected due to the expansion of renewable energy generation.

Local communities are vital partners in our net-zero journey
Local Engagement Matters
We truly value the involvement of local people and appreciate their expertise and commitment. Seeking the participation of the local community in our projects is an important priority, from neighbours through to farmers, nature conservation charities, and local authorities.
Ultimately, we want our solar projects to not only play a key role in delivering renewable electricity and enabling the energy transition, but also to help local communities.
Communities can benefit from solar farms in diverse way – from direct civic engagement and local sponsorships through to educational events and training and job opportunities. These rich opportunities for the local community are developed mutually by all involved. We know that for the energy transition to be a success, we must all be committed.
By supporting a solar park, you are significantly helping to achieve global renewables targets. If you are looking for a partner for your solar project, we’d love to hear from you.

Our Ground-mounted PV Initiatives in Numbers
Solar parks foster biodiversity
Numerous studies by environmental organisations have demonstrated the positive impact of solar parks on biodiversity.
From the outset, starting with project design, we always look at how we can enhance biodiversity in our PV systems. For example, our designs can incorporate insect and lizard hotels, beehives, or flower strips. Sheep grazing can also significantly impact the nature of green pastures.
We also endeavour to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum during the construction stages of our solar projects.

Frequently asked questions about our Ground-mounted PV systems
- How can landowners benefit from ground-mounted PV systems?
With a solar plant on open spaces, you actively contribute to the success of the energy transition and can also enjoy long-term, fixed lease income without risking your own investment. The land covered with PV also serves to promote biodiversity, as the area is used extensively during the entire term and the soil can recover. Adjacent agricultural land also benefits from new biodiversity. If you decide to provide ‘green maintenance‘ as the owner or lessor of the land, you can generate additional income.
- What are the advantages of a partnership with BayWa r.e.?
With decades of experience in the field of renewable energy, we have comprehensive, worldwide know-how, expertise and networks. We are a quality-oriented full-service provider with a solid financial background. Through our local best practices all over the world, we have extensive knowledge of respective local conditions. From project conception to completion - we are and will remain your trustworthy, competent and reliable partner throughout the entire life cycle of the PV plant.
- Does the PV plant affect the flora and fauna or the soil quality?
It’s wrong to think that the construction of a solar park will require huge areas to be concreted over. The substructure of PV modules is inserted deep into the ground in ground-mounted systems, making the need for any foundations superfluous. Green areas and meadows remain, offering plentiful, usable space. Since neither pesticides nor fertilizers are used, extensively produced hay can be obtained, or sheep grazing provided. As mown material is removed, this creates green areas that are particularly valuable for biodiversity. Mulch mowing is also possible, where the mown material remains on the area.
- Can the area I provide for PV be used for other purposes?
One form of multiple use of solar park areas is the combination with livestock farming. Often solar parks also serve as sheep pasture. Photovoltaics can therefore be combined with livestock farming, the production of hay, or mulch build-up – all delivering the protection and promotion of biodiversity. It’s even possible to establish food production – Agri-PV -on the same area. Read more on our Agri-PV webpage.
- How important is ground-mounted PV for the success of the energy transition?
To make the global energy transition a reality, large-scale ground-mounted solar parks are vital for the supply of reliable, predictable volumes of renewable electricity. Large-scale ground-mounted PV systems ensure that there will always be enough renewable energy for households, business and industry, able to meet growing demand 24-7. Thanks to advances in battery and hydrolysis technology.
- What is the potential of large-scale ground-mounted solar parks globally?
We need only 0.3% of the global land area to build solar parks that would meet all our global energy needs – less than the current land footprint of fossil fuel infrastructure. More land is currently being taken up to extract and process coal resources that added 34 billion tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere last year.
- What has to be considered when planning a PV plant on an open space?
For a project developer, it is important to observe local regulations and to coordinate closely with the community from the very beginning. For us at BayWa r.e., it is important to involve the local population and nature conservation authorities in the planning process as early as possible in order to create added value for everyone involved. With our projects, we want to protect both the climate and biodiversity while strengthening the region economically. A decentralized energy transition must be supported by the general population – which is why we are increasingly relying on local support.
