With the relative scarcity of new planning areas, replacing old wind turbines with modern, efficient systems is becoming an increasingly important way to increase the yield from wind farms. Planning errors in existing wind farms can be corrected and environmental impact (such as noise pollution) can be reduced.
BayWa r.e. organises the repowering with operators, land owners, local communities, residents and investors. Small corrections with gigantic effects
In many wind turbines, the increasing levels of vibration accelerate the wear of mechanical components. Static and dynamic imbalances and incorrectly set pitches result in substantial and early material fatigue on vital parts.
Higher noise levels, cracks in rotor blades, damage to the pitch mechanism, blade bearing damage with loss of lubricant, gearbox damage, cracks in the mainframe and wear in the yaw brakes can follow.
In order to deal with these signs of wear in good time, we can call on measures and methods following an effective vibration analysis that allow us to balance rotor blades and effect pitch corrections. This reliably corrects blade imbalances and incorrect pitches due to dynamic and mass-related influences, resulting in a reduction of vibrations in the rotor and nacelle – independent of hub height, or whether at a single site or on a wind farm. These corrective measures minimise high yield losses and repair costs sustainably and over long periods.

Components that can be retrofitted for optimising rotor blade performance
Our e-ro programme develops components as retrofit sets for existing or new rotor blades on wind turbines. These are designed to significantly improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce noise development in rotor blades. Integrating our retrofit sets improves the flow characteristics significantly.
Existing rotor blades, particularly those that are earmarked for inspection and repairs following several years in use, should be extended through the mounting of appropriate components. Operators benefit from substantial increases in annual energy yields, thereby resulting in rapid payback.
The DEWI OCC-certified components are unique and offer fantastic improvements in output, particularly in less than optimum locations, without having a negative effect on other wind turbine assemblies.
Automated ICE WEC heating system for retrofitting
Wind turbines in locations that experience colder weather, in mountainous terrain and at certain heights above sea level, are at high risk of ice build-up during the winter months. Operation at these locations has an influence on the sizing of the turbine regarding aerodynamics, loads, control and safety (jettisoning pieces of ice, imbalance, resonances, etc.) as well as energy yield. Icing-up primarily affects the rotor blades. Here, large amounts of ice can build up very rapidly, resulting in the need for turbines to be shut down in order to prevent pieces of ice being jettisoned. Shutdown duration depends on how long icy conditions last, the level of build-up and the output control – for the operator this means falling energy yields and increased losses. These losses may amount to as much as 20 % of the annual yield. These factors may significantly affect the safe, reliable and economical operation of wind turbines.
Our automatically regulated heating system, developed in-house, is made as a component that can be mounted retrospectively to rotor blades of any size. Once installed by our trained personnel it will not adversely affect rotor blade quality, lightning protection or any other parameters.
New rotor blades of any performance category can also be equipped with ICE WEC as part of the existing production process.
