How do hybrid renewable energy projects work?

The most common form of hybrid project is combining wind or solar power plants with battery energy storage solutions (BESS). This allows the project to shift its energy production to hours when energy demand is low and market prices are higher. It also unlocks additional revenue opportunities in the energy and ancillary service markets. 

There are several approaches to tailor a hybrid project. The ideal solution will be built around an individual site, or sites: 

  • A full hybrid project has all technologies synergised and optimised to work together, using the same grid connection and being economically dependant

  • A co-located project places technologies together or in close proximity, utilizing the same grid, while each technology is operated independently
