Modernised digital infrastructure that unlocks full potential

Increased renewable energy generation must come hand-in-hand with investment in improved energy infrastructure and digitalisation to unlock its full potential. It is clear that different regions are moving at different paces, but it is also clear that this need is recognised and we see initiatives and funding coming forward.

The speed of modernisation must then match the speed at which new renewable generation will need to come on to global grids, if it is to act as an enabler rather than an encumbrance.

Despite a 7% year-on-year reduction in overall expenditures, grids became further decentralised and digitalised in 2019. Utilities around the world deployed more sophisticated technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital twinning.
