There’s a real sense of excitement today as our fantastic Sonnenwagen Team start their race to win the Solar Challenge Morocco 2021.
After a busy week of scrutineering, qualifying and repairs following a last-minute crash, the Covestro Photon has now crossed the start line.
We’re very pleased to see that Team Sonnenwagen has now begun their long-distance race which will see the car and its drivers travel more than 2500km, from the foot of the Atlas Mountains to the edge of the Sahara Desert.
It’s not all been plain sailing though and the team has worked incredibly hard to be able to start the race today! First, the new car went through the scrutineering process, where independent judges conducted tests on all the systems, electrical, mechanical, and structural - as well as the car’s driving performance and safety systems. We’re very pleased to say that, with a few quick changes by the team, it passed.
Next came the qualifying stage, and over the last two days the team were determined to set the fastest lap, however after the warm-up lap – disaster struck, and the car hit a tree stump which severely damaged the suspension!
Testament to the skills of the team, they sprang into action and worked on the car overnight to rebuild the suspension and set it back on all three wheels, ready for today’s race.
With the race now underway, we wish Team Sonnenwagen good luck and hope they beat all expectations.
The race comprises five stages which will see the seven competing teams cross from Agadir through Zagora, Merzouga, Ouazazarte and back to Agadir.
The race ends on October 29th – stay tuned to find out how they get on.
