BayWa r.e. and Elicio, an international producer of onshore and offshore wind energy, have pre-qualified to participate in the Mediterranean floating offshore wind tender in France.

This is the third floating offshore wind project jointly developed by the two companies, which have already pre-qualified for a tender in Southern Brittany, as well as been awarded the 960 MW NE8 site as part of the recent ScotWind tender earlier this year.

A strong Mediterranean base

Moving forward through the development process, BayWa r.e. and Elicio can rely on their regional locations and expertise, particularly in Toulouse, Carcassonne, Montpellier, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence.

"Offshore wind projects are first and foremost regional projects," explained Aldrik de Fombelle, Director of Offshore Wind Development at Elicio. "In the Mediterranean, a maritime area rich in biodiversity, where people have been fishing and sailing for thousands of years, we want to develop projects in consultation with local ecosystems, particularly industrial and environmental ones, sea users, and all stakeholders."

More than 1.7 GW of projects under joint development

The Buchan Offshore Wind project in Scotland with a capacity of 960 MW is scheduled to come on stream by 2030.

The submission of bids for the tender in Southern Brittany, a 250 MW project off the coast of Lorient, is planned for the beginning of next year, with the winner to be selected mid-2023.

This new pre-qualification brings the volume of projects jointly being developed by Elicio and BayWa r.e. to more than 1.7 GW.

Felipe Cornago, Commercial Director Offshore Wind at BayWa r.e., added: “We’re delighted to strengthen our partnership with Elicio, replicating the success we have seen with the Brittany and ScotWind tenders. The participation in the Mediterranean tender reinforces our commitment and ambition to consolidate BayWa r.e. as a key global offshore wind player. As well as expanding our team, partnerships such as the one with Elicio are a key element to achieving our ambitions in the offshore space.”

1.5 GW of floating offshore wind to be developed in the Mediterranean Sea

This new commercial call for tender foresees two wind farms, located off the coast of “La Narbonnaise” and off the Gulf of Fos, each with a capacity of 250 MW. They will be located more than 22 km from the coast and will occupy an area of approximately 50 km². An extension of 500 MW is planned for each farm. The winners of the tender procedure will be designated in 2023, with the wind farms expected to be commissioned by 2030.

"This second commercial tender for floating offshore wind power places France among the most advanced countries in this technology. The Mediterranean basin, with its three pilot projects, should become a centre of excellence for this technology by developing the skills of local industry and local jobs," commented Corentin Sivy, Director of Wind Projects at BayWa r.e. France.
