Case Study

Maximum performance and exceptional yield

01—
Setting the scene

Located in Lincolnshire, Bishopthorpe is an eight-turbine wind farm, generating 16.4 MW of clean green energy to the national grid.

Our team of experts value engineered the entire project and had it installed and generating electricity within a year, to qualify for the Renewables Obligation support scheme.

With a maximum blade tip height of 115 metres, and an impressive forecast net capacity factor of 35.5 percent, it attracted significant interest from investors before it became an important asset in the portfolio of leading renewable infrastructure fund, Greencoat UK Wind Plc.

02—
Meeting the Challenge

Located South of Grimsby, we acquired Bishopthorpe from developer Evergreen Renewables (then ASC Renewables), following a competitive tender.

There was significant interest in its sale, but it was our reliability, expertise, and track record in successfully delivering largescale wind developments that ensured we were always in prime position.

Our financial strength and project financing options, combined with our engineering, development and technical expertise, means we’re able to help bring projects forward and improve their performance, while also driving down the levelised cost of energy and creating high quality assets. This makes us attractive to developers looking to partner, and investors looking to acquire.

BayWa r.e. is an innovative and forward-thinking business, and an important partner to us. Its team is one of the most experienced in the sector, which made them the perfect partner on Bishopthorpe. They delivered the best solution for us […].

Head of Sustainability, Evergreen Energy

Despite needing to install and manage a complex grid connection via 8 km of offsite cabling works, the installation took just 37 days. And the site was generating power in just over 12 months from purchase to commissioning. Well in time to qualify for the Renewables Obligation.

With the environment and sustainability siting at the heart of everything we do, we also created a habitat management area of just under 100 acres for migratory birds.

Getting the result

By using our expertise, we were able to add value and optimise the project at every turn. Ultimately, helping to ensure an attractive investment with reliable returns for Greencoat.

Bishopthorpe is the fifth wind farm that Greencoat has bought from BayWa r.e. in as many years and follows on from Cotton Farm, Earl's Hall Farm, Kildrummy and Stroupster. Including Bishopthorpe, we now operate and maintain eight wind farms in the company's portfolio.

Our dedicated UK technical team monitors the site 365 days a year, assessing turbine production, providing preventative maintenance and maximising performance and yields.

Greencoat Capital has a longstanding and deep relationship with BayWa r.e. […]. Bishopthorpe is a great investment […] and it was very natural that BayWa r.e. and Greencoat should team up again for this transaction. We […] have found BayWa r.e. to be very efficient and professional.
