BayWa r.e. commissions biomethane plant in the UK

Jointly with ArcEnergy Ltd., BayWa r.e. has commissioned the biomethane plant Meden approx. 35 km south-east of Sheffield.

With the implementation of the first biomethane plant in the UK BayWa r.e. is extending an established plant concept to another European market. The modern plant with RHI certification (Renewable Heat Incentive) benefits from several fixed inflation-adjusted subsidies over 20 years. Every year, some 36,000 tonnes of renewable raw materials are fermented and transformed into biomethane. The maximum gas supply capacity is approx. 500 Nm³/h. The plant can thus supply approx. 2,400 households with biomethane gas. With the involvement of local farmers as substrate suppliers it makes an important contribution to regional value creation. The service team, made up of four local employees, ensures continuous plant operation 24/7. The surrounding communities and regional political authorities have supported the project from the start.

Matthias Taft, Board Member of BayWa AG, responsible for the energy business, stressed: "With the framework conditions having changed in 2014, larger new plants are near impossible to implement in the German bioenergy market. We therefore decided to develop this project. I am very pleased to now be able to announce the commissioning of our first biomethane plant in England. We still believe that bioenergy with its base load capability and the possibility of organic waste disposal makes an essential contribution to the success of a turnaround in European energy policy."
