BayWa r.e. commissions Guggenberg II wind farm
In mid April, BayWa r.e. successfully commissioned the 4.8 MW capacity Guggenberg II wind farm. The farm comprises two turbines, and is situated in the Miltenberg district of Bavaria, on the border with Baden-Wuerttemberg.
The turbines are sited on an upland plateau, in the immediate vicinity of an existing wind farm. The newly developed area continues to be used for agriculture. Local construction firms were used extensively for this project, ensuring that most of the value created will stay in the region.
BayWa r.e. developed the wind farm itself, and is also responsible for operations management and energy trading. Both Nordex N117 turbines have a hub height of 140 metres, and have been specially designed for onshore sites with lower levels of wind. Matthias Taft, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. and BayWa AG board member for the energy sector, said of the newly commissioned farm: "The Guggenberg project shows that there are still good wind farm sites in Bavaria. Now the technology is mature, wind turbines can be tailored to suit local conditions."
The Bavarian 10H Regulation makes it harder to gain approval for future wind farm projects. In the first quarter of 2015, applications were made for some 50 MW of capacity. If wind power in Bavaria is to meet its expansion target of 6 % by 2021 – which has already been revised downwards – then around 500 MW of newly installed capacity will be needed each year. "Although the 10H Regulation greatly restricts the installation of new turbines, we are still investigating ways of influencing future energy transition in Bavaria," concluded Matthias Taft.
