BayWa r.e. commissions the CHP unit of the Barby biomethane plant
BayWa r.e. successfully commissioned the raw gas plant and the CHP unit of the Barby biomethane plant in Sachsen-Anhalt. The total investment for this project ran to around €16 mill.
"For quite a number of us, the day we commissioned the CHP unit was rather special. In the course of this project we needed to face up to several challenges", explained Matthias Taft, CEO of BayWa r.e. During construction, we discovered a 4000 year old settlement from the Bronze Age on site. "The excellent cooperation of all participants, including the authorities, allowed work to start in August – and so we were able to commission the CHP unit in time before the Renewable Energy Sources Act 2012 expires", added Taft.
The biogas obtained from sustainable raw materials is partially converted into electricity, whilst the remainder is upgraded into biomethane in a biogas upgrading plant. Capacities are 550 kilowatt electrical energy and 700 Nm3/h biomethane. This represents around 64,000 megawatt hours of biomethane and 3500 megawatt hours of green electricity which can be exported into the German gas and electricity grid each year. BayWa r.e. took over the approved project at the end of 2013. Full capacity of the plant is scheduled to be available from summer 2015.
BayWa r.e. will be placing even greater emphasis on services in the bioenergy sector in the future. As well as raw material management, this will include the commercial, technical and biological management of existing biogas and biomethane plants in particular. BayWa r.e. plans to make increased use of its extensive project experience and technological expertise for projects abroad.
