BayWa r.e. and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen municipal works department have extended their business cooperation. From next year, BayWa r.e. will increase its biomethane supply fivefold to more than 100 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually.

"The strengthening of our business relationship shows that we represent a reliable and competent partner for our customers and suppliers", said Matthias Taft, CEO of BayWa r.e. With the expansion of its biomethane supply, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is taking an important step on the path to low-emission and resource-efficient energy generation. The biomethane will be used in the municipal works' new power generation plants. Initially, approximately 44 GWh of electricity and 25 GWh of useful heat will be generated in the newly built, highly efficient combined heat and power plants – enabling an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of around 21,000 tons.

"With the expansion planned for the district heating network in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, our biomethane use should increase to 120 GWh in the medium term. In the final stage, we will be able to cover the electricity consumption of almost 10,000 four-person households and more than 150 buildings (mainly wholesale customers) with CO2-neutral heat over many years", explained municipal works board member, Wodan Lichtmeß. He continued: "Thanks to our long-term supply relationship with BayWa r.e., the positive effect of this CO2 reduction for the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be significantly higher than conventional expectations."

The amendment of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) on 1 August 2014 was considered by the industry to be a decisive point. "Contracts such as the one recently concluded with the Garmisch-Partenkirchen municipal works department have encouraged us – despite the difficult environment – to expand our business in the field of biomethane in the coming years", added Matthias Taft.
