BayWa r.e. begins construction of Pessin biomethane plant
In mid-October BayWa r.e. began construction of the Pessin biomethane plant in Brandenburg. The plant has a capacity of seven megawatts and is expected to be commissioned in summer 2015.
BayWa r.e. is the developer, owner and operator of the plant, while Schmack Biogas GmbH, a subsidiary of the Viessmann Group, is responsible for its construction. The facility is being built in Pessin, a municipality in the Havelland district in north-west Berlin. It will feed around 64 million kilowatt hours of biomethane into the local grid each year, supplying around 4000 households with renewable heat.
"The options for storing renewable energy are a major focus for the whole industry – biomethane plants make a valuable contribution to the energy supply system, as the generated biomethane can be stored and consumed as needed", explains Matthias Taft, CEO of BayWa r.e. The raw gas produced in the biogas plant is refined in the biogas treatment plant, where the methane content is raised to 96 percent. This means that the biogas is of the same quality as natural gas and can be directly fed into the local supply network.
Local farmers provide the substrate, which consists of cattle slurry, whole crop silage, sugar beet, grass and other secondary raw materials. "The local value creation underlines the sustainability of this project", notes Taft. BayWa r.e. will also be responsible for operations management at the plant.
BayWa r.e. will be placing even greater emphasis on services in the bioenergy sector in the future. As well as raw material management, this chiefly includes the commercial and technical management of existing biogas and biomethane plants. BayWa r.e. plans to make increased use of its extensive project experience and technological expertise for projects abroad.
